CACA Signed Collaboration Agreement with SLACOM, Cancer Australia, and Medicaid Cancer Foundation

On 18th November, 2023, China Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) signed Collaboration Agreement with Latin-American & Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology (SLACOM), The Commonwealth of Australia represented by Cancer Australia (Cancer Australia), and Medicaid Cancer Foundation during the 2023 Chinese Congress of Holistic Integrative Oncology (CCHIO). Prof. Daiming Fan, President of CACA, Prof. Ying Wang, Vice President of CACA, Prof. Daniel J. Campos, Director of the Clinical Research Institute of SLACOM, Prof. Dorothy Keefe, CEO of Cancer Australia, Prof. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, CEO of Medicaid Cancer Foundation and other experts from Latin-America, Australia, and Africa participated in the signing ceremony.

Prof. Wang introduced the background of collaboration. On August, 2023, CACA held the China-Latin America Anti-Cancer Summit together with SLACOM, and the number of online viewers reached 17.23 million. This year, CACA collaborated with Cancer Australia and held the China-Australia Anti-Cancer Summit on July 26th. It attracted 14.66 million viewers online. On August 23rd, CACA held the China-Latin America Anti-Cancer Summit with SLACOM. The online viewers reached 17.23 million. On September 13rd, CACA collaborated with First Ladies Against Cancer organization in Africa and held the China-Africa Anti-Cancer Summit with 15.56 million viewers online. The summit has played a key role in promoting the CACA's international exchanges and cooperation, and improving global cancer control. To promote bilateral collaboration, SLACOM, Cancer Australia, and Medicaid Cancer Foundation recommended experts and led delegations to participate in the 2023 CCHIO for academic exchange and closer interaction. To further strengthen the collaboration, CACA held the signing ceremony during the congress.

Prof. Fan delivered a remark on the ceremony. He said as the largest and most influential cancer association nationwide, CACA plays an important role in offering platforms of exchanges built through joint efforts that deliver benefits to all. CACA highly values external communication and cooperation, and provides variety exchange platforms with global cancer organizations. CACA will work together with SLACOM, Cancer Australia, and Medicaid Cancer Foundation to develop further bilateral collaboration and hold activities that support the mission of both organizations. He believes that with joint efforts, the two sides will enhance cooperation across the board and build a high-quality partnership.

Prof. Campos stated that China and Latin-America share similar challenges in cancer control despite the geographical distances. The common issues unite the two sides and demonstrate that we are all in this cause together. The opportunity to contribute with ideas, projects and experiences fills SLACOM with enthusiasm. What binds the two organizations is not just a shared vocation, but also the intentions and collective sense of purpose and spirituality. The mission of Latin-American delegation is to share and disseminate this gratifying journey within their networks, in the hopes of perpetuating it.

Prof. Keefe mentioned that the signing ceremony is a wonderful opportunity for sharing and improving relationships. Australia and China share so many common issues, but we also have differences, and we are able to learn from each other’s differences and strength. For all of us in the cancer sector the thing matters most is the patient and improving the patient’s journey through training, screening, early detection, diagnosis, research, and care for the patient. Prof. Keefe has known about CACA for at least a decade, and she is looking forward to sharing and collaborating with CACA to help people with the burden of cancer.

Prof. Bagudu said that it’s really a pleasure to participate in this landmark activity. Africa carries the largest burden in regards of most diseases including cancer. It is caused by many factors, such as awareness, facilities, human resource, and financial constraints. China has very close relationship with Nigeria, and Medicaid Cancer Foundation is very willing to work with CACA. One cannot implement things along in the room. We have to work together and build partnerships. With collaboration, we can train talents and improve their level of skills. Prof. Bagudu has many ideas in her mind, and she believes that the two organizations have the capacity to implement them.

CACA and SLACOM, Cancer Australia, and Medicaid Cancer Foundation reached agreement on making efforts in jointly launching scientific, education projects/programmes on cancer care continuum progresses and innovations; Cooperation in promoting initiatives, activities; Faculty exchanges from both organizations on specific institutional activities of mutual interest; Jointly host bilateral symposium/forum/workshops.

SLACOM is an academic entity constituted by different cancer control specialists who have a comprehensive vision of the problem, understanding that the current international approach requires facing the problem from education, research, primary prevention, secondary prevention, a correct and timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment as well as palliative care, access to morphine, end of life and survivorship. Cancer Australia is the Australian Government’s national cancer control agency that aims to reduce the impact of all cancers and improve outcomes and experiences for all people affected by cancer. It fulfills its statutory obligations to fund cancer research by building research capability and addressing emerging priorities for cancer research. It also lends expertise to inform international cancer control. Cancer Australia uses its position as a trusted collaborator to facilitate a unity of purpose across the sector in setting priorities for cancer control both in Australia and internationally. The signing ceremony of collaboration agreement will further develop the bilateral cooperation between CACA and SLACOM, Cancer Australia, as well as Medicaid Cancer Foundation. It will build a bridge for Chinese experts to exchange and share their expertise with foreign cancer organizations and improve the status of global cancer control.
