The 2023 China-Latin America Anti-Cancer Summit Was Successfully Held Online

The 2023 China-Latin America Anti-Cancer Summit was successfully held virtually on August 23th. The event was jointly hosted by China Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) and Latin-American & Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology (SLACOM). This academic summit has gathered the attention of population from sixteen countries including China, America, Germany, Netherlands, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, Japan, Philippines, Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, Egypt, Madagascar, with a total of 17.23 million live viewers.

The anti-cancer leading figures in the field of anti-cancer from both China and Latin America were invited to this summit for the exchange of ideas and perspectives by discussing and sharing the latest cancer research results, so as to boost the development of oncology, as well as contribute to cancer mortality reduction.

Prof. Daiming Fan, the President of CACA, gave a presentation titled “Development of holistic integrative management of cancer in China”. He introduced that in 2022, CACA published the CACA Guidelines for Holistic Integrative Management of Cancer which covers 53 types of tumors and focuses on the whole course management of cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. In this year, CACA published another guideline named CACA Technical Guidelines for Holistic Integrative Management of Cancer which includes 60 guidelines on techniques and focuses on assessment, support, control, protection, and survival. Embodied valuable “Chinese approaches” and “Chinese experience”, the CACA Guidelines can provide references on cancer care for Latin-America and other countries.

Professor Eduardo L. Cazap, the President and Funder of Latin-American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology(SLACOM) picked up on “Vision and perspectives in Global Cancer Control”. He pointed out that the key for fighting against cancer is mainly in the public sector which needs to tailor to each individual environment as well as structure and efficiency of health care systems, together with universal health coverage.

Professor Daniel Campos, the Director of Clinical Research Institute SLACOM, has shared his findings on the topic of “Is Latin America ready to overcome the challenges of implementing Precision Medicine?”He introduced the core concept of precision medicine, and summarized its development status.

Prof Luiz Antonio Santini, the Co-Chair of RINC-SLACOM, as well as the Former Director General of National Cancer Institute in Brazil, delivered the speech focused on “Cancer Control and Public Policy in Latin-America and the Caribbean.” After introducing the health systems in Latin America as well as policy of cancer prevention and control in Brazil, he came up with unique viewpoint and approaches according to the current trends of rising cancer incidence.

As a highlight of this summit, the panel discussion between experts on the different characteristics of cancer incidence, cancer prevention and control strategies in China and Latin America, has also attracted wide attention. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including: China's national strategy for cancer control and cancer mortality reduction, challenges faced by governments in Latin America and the Caribbean for comprehensively implementing cancer plans and promoting precision medicine as well as how to overcome these challenges, ways for NGOs to become an effective advocate for the cancer control and so on.

With those exchanges, Chinese and Latin-America experts reached a consensus on promoting standardized diagnosis and treatment of cancer  as well as strengthening international cooperation.

This summit was chaired by Professor Anna Lee, the Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society and delivered a welcome remark by Professor Ying Wang, the Vice President of CACA.

As CACA did at the previous China-US Anti-Cancer Summit, China-Europe Anti-Cancer Summit and China-Australia Anti-Cancer Summit, the 2023 China-Latin America Anti-Cancer Summit has provided another unique platform for oncologists both in China and Latin America to learn from each other and will promote the global cancer control in the future after. This summit will stand as a shining example for the future cooperation of China and Latin-America.
