The 2023 China-Australia Anti-Cancer Summit Was Successfully Held Online

The 2023 China-Australia Anti-Cancer Summit was successfully held virtually on July 26th. The event was jointly hosted by China Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) and CACA Australia as well as co-organized by eChinaHealth. This academic summit has gathered the attention of population from ten countries including China, the United States, Australia, Denmark, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Morocco, Egypt and South Africa, with a total of 14.66 million live viewers.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of illness and death in the world. As the population ages, the global cancer burden will continue to increase. It is expected that the total number of cancer patients worldwide will reach approximately 28 million, and 16.2 million deaths by 2040. Over 40% of cancer cases are attributed to preventable factors such as smoking bans, healthy eating, physical activity, etc. Basic research and innovative therapies are also changing patients' outcome. The future path to fighting cancer requires international cooperation as well as the promotion of scientific and technological innovation.

The anti-cancer leaders from both China and Australia were invited to this summit for the exchange of ideas and perspectives on the treatment of cancer patients by discussing and sharing the latest research results, so as to boost academic development of oncology.

Prof. Daiming Fan, the President of CACA, gave a presentation titled “Development of holistic integrative management of cancer in China”. He introduced that in 2022, CACA published the CACA Guidelines for Holistic Integrative Management of Cancer which covers 53 types of tumors and focuses on the whole course management of cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. In this year, CACA published another guideline named CACA Technical Guidelines for Holistic Integrative Management of Cancer which includes 60 guidelines on techniques and focuses on assessment, support, control, protection, and survival. The CACA Guidelines can provide references on cancer care for foreign countries.

Dr Xueqin Yu, the president of CACA Australia, has been engaged in presented a lecture titled “Cancer Burden in Australia-Looking Back and Look Ahead”, which has played an important role in implications for cancer service planning, cancer survival and cancer prognosis improvement.

As the CEO of Cancer Australia, Prof. Dorothy Keefe has shared her findings on the topic of “Advancing Cancer Control in Australia”, which provided references for cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment in China.

Prof.Ian Frazer, the President of Australia Academy of Health and Medical Sciences  (AAHMS) as well as honorary professor at the University of Queensland, has been involved in HPV and cervical cancer research for many years. As the co-inventor of HPV vaccine technology, Dr. Frazer delivered a speech entitled "Immunotherapy-Where Have We Got to? Progress and Challenges for HPV Associated Cancer”, which helped to promote research progress in related fields.

As a highlight of this summit, the panel discussion between experts on the different characteristics of cancer incidence as well as cancer prevention and control strategies in China and Australia, has also attracted wide attentions. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the methods for implementing holistic integrative management of cancer in China, the criteria for measuring the clinical application of CACA guidelines, methods of establishing an evaluation system and conduct expert certification, evaluation indicators of treatment effects, the reasons for the regional differences in cancer incidence and mortality in China and improvement  measures. Experts also discussed about the causes of breast and colorectal cancer in Australia and ways to reduce mortality, as well as the implement of cancer screening programs. With those exchanges, Chinese and Australian experts reached a consensus on promoting standardized diagnosis and treatment of cancer  as well as strengthening international cooperation.

The summit was chaired by Dr. Nicole Li, the Vice President of CACA Australia.  Prof. Ying Wang, Vice President of CACA attended the conference and delivered remarks.

As CACA did at the previous China-US Anti-Cancer Summit and China-Europe Anti-Cancer Summit, the 2023 China-Australia Anti-Cancer Summit has provided another unique platform for oncologists in China and Australia to learn from each other and will promote the global cancer control in the future after.
