2014 World Cancer Day Campaign launched by CACA in Tianjin

　　The launching ceremony of 2014 World Cancer Day was successfully held in Tianjin on Jan 10th , 2014, which was organized by Chinese Anti-Cancer Association(CACA), sponsored by Tianjin Anti-Cancer Association, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital and Tumor branch of Tianjin Medical Association. Public education and free medical consultation were provided to the publics at the same time.

　　World Cancer Day is initiated by Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) since 2008 and takes place every year on 4 February. Its aim is to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease.

　　Cancer is a world’s leading killer and is not yet on key global health agendas. Without intervention, the global cancer burden is projected to increase 75% by 2030. Every month 600,000 people die of cancer and many of these deaths can be avoided with increased governmental support and funding for prevention, detection and treatment programmes. As members of UICC, CACA and TMUCIH took responsibility of developing World Cancer Day campaign in China each year in order to raise pubic awareness of cancer and improve early detection and diagnosis.

　　“Debunk the myths” is the theme of 2014 World Cancer Day, which advocates people to dispel some damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer.

　　CACA brought together 200 cancer survivors, hesrchcare workers, publics and journalists at Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital to launch the 2014 World Cancer Day. Prof. Ying Wang, General Secretary of CACA hosted the ceremony. Academician Xi Shan Hao, President of CACA mentioned at this speech, “A study published by UICC showed that misconceptions and misunderstandings about cancer exist popularly among the cancer patients and their relatives, hesrch people, policy makers, even some doctors and nurses that refer to prevention, diagnosis, therapy and hesrchcare about cancer. China as one of high incidence region, it’s critical and important for us to eliminate some myths gradually in our country. CACA will organize experts to spread some correct ideas and knowledge of cancer via multifaceted ways in order to arouse the public attention and make them face to cancer positively and scientifically.”Besides, Mr. Jing Mei Bai, Vice chairman of Tianjin Science & Technology Association and Prof. Ping Wang, President of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital also delivered speeches at the ceremony. Prof. Bu Jian Tang, Prof. Qi Fan Zhang, Prof. Duan Qi Liu from CACA and Mr. Hong Ye Xin from Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital presented as well. The ceremony was closed by signing names on the publicity board of “2014 World Cancer Day”.

　　Scientific and educational lectures were welcomed by the publics. Prof. Ming Gao from Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital and Prof. Wei Liu from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Medical University gave educational lectures on “Prevention and therapy of thyroid cancer” and ”Cancer is a type of chronic disease ” respectively.

　　Renowned cancer experts provided multidisciplinary consultation to the publics, which includes lung, esophageal, breast, colorectal and head & neck cancer. There are about hundreds of people were benefit from the medical consultation.

　　Press release conference was held during the ceremony. CCTV news, XinHua News Agency, Hesrch News and other 20 news agencies reported activities of 2014 World Cancer Day held in China.

　　To promote the 2014 World Cancer Day and spread the messaging of UICC, local Anti-Cancer Associations of CACA held public education activities across China under the theme “Debunk the myths”.
