On April 11th, 2010, the opening ceremony of 16th National Cancer Week was launched in Hefei, Anhui Province. This ceremony was jointly sponsored by the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) and the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and co-sponsored by the Anhui Science and Technology Association, the Anhui Anti-Cancer Association and the Anhui Jimin Hospital. Attendees of the ceremony included Prof. Hao Xishan, President of the CACA, Prof. Kong Lingzhi, Deputy-Director of the Bureau of Disease Prevention of the Chinese Ministry of Health, Prof. Gao Kan, Deputy-Director of the Science Popularization Department of the Chinese Science and Technology Association, Prof. Gao Kaiyan, Director of the Anhui Health Department and the leadership of other organizations such as the Anhui Anti-Cancer Association and Jimin Hospital.

　　Prof. Hao Xishan extended his warm welcome to the attendees and his sincere thanks to the sponsors and co-sponsors. He said, “Cancer, as a severe disease, poses a thread to human lives. Recently, with the aging of population and changes of life and environment, the mortality and incidence of cancer has been taking a upward trend. Cancer acts as the worst killer of the citizens of towns and cities. The news came to us time to time that one of our colleagues, friends or family members is diagnosed as a cancer patient. Cancer is getting closer and closer. As the largest developing country of the world, China has became a nation whose tasks of cancer prevention and control are more and more tough. In spite of the break through in the cytobiology and genomics fields and people’s confidence in succeed in combating cancer during 21st century, we still have a long way to go to conquer this complicate disease because of multivariate and multistage characteristics of cancer and some social and economic reasons. Early diagnosis and treatment has been functioning as the most effective way to cancer control.”

　　Prof. Gao Kan, on behalf of the Science Popularization Department of the Science and Technology Association extended his warmest congratulation to the 16th National Cancer Week. He also thanked and showed respect to those medical workers who were fighting against cancer. After the issuing of the Outline of National Action Scheme of Scientific Quality for All Chinese Citizens by the State Council, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association made full use of its advantages and conducted quite a few programs on the theme of enhance national scientific awareness and environmental protection. The National Cancer Week as the top program of the CACA has made much progress in enhancing the cancer control awareness, spreading cancer knowledge and improve national health level. He hoped that more and more people of different walks could participate in this activity.

　　Prof. Kong Lingzhi mentioned in her speech that statistics had shown that 60% of all cancers can be prevented through simple changes of life styles.

　　To show love and care to cancer patients, during the ceremony, twelve cancer survivors are awarded certificates for their braveness of fighting against cancer.

　　At last of the ceremony, the attendees lighted the ball that symbolized the 16th National Cancer Week. Prof. Hao announced the start of the National Cancer Week amid the thundering cheers.

　　After the ceremony, a large-scaled public-benefit lectures and consultation was conducted. Over 300 people benefit from this service.
