On the World Cancer Day 2010, in order to spread the knowledge of cancer control and arouse the awareness of the public, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) and its 30 local associations and 36 specialized committees put much effort in making their activities effective, informative and attractive.
Far before February, 2010, the CACA questionnaired its members about the services they had expected during the World Cancer Day. The CACA also designed posters in 8 styles according to those of the UICC, and sent to all the local associations and specialized committees.
Prof. HAO Xishan, President of the CACA, Prof. ZHANG Guangchao, General Secretary and Prof. ZHI Xiuyi, Director of Science Popularization Department were interviewed by PEOPLE.COM and SOHU.COM. Thousands of netizens watched the videos through internet on on February 4th, 2010.Prof. Hao mentioned in the interview that the loss caused by cancer is inestimable. Given that 1/3 of all cancer incidence in the world is evitable, people cultivate health life-style to reduce the chance of having cancer. Parents and teachers should set examples for children, quitting smoking, avoiding second-hand smoke, eating healthily, exercising regularly and injecting vaccines.
Prof. Hao also introduced the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and the 2010 World Cancer Congress that will be held in Shenzhen in August 2010. “The congress emphasizes on cancer burden of China as well as other parts of the world.” Prof. Hao said, “We will tell the world what our experts are doing and learn what the world has done.” Cancer cannot be defeated by one nation alone, but by the join effort of every one in the world.
“Cancer as a kind of chronicillness should be prevented at the early stage of life”, Prof. Zhang, General Secretary of CACA told the press. Regarding the topic of the World Cancer Day, “Cancer can be prevented too”, Dr. Zhang introduced how the risk of developing cancer can significantly be reduced through simple measures. Some of the cancers, such as live cancer and cervical cancer are caused by the infections. Vaccines is a effect way to guard against the cancers caused by infections. To popularize those vaccines could effectively prevent the incidence of cancer in the next 20 years.
The CACA has received many summing-up reports on the World Cancer Day by far. The cancer survivors prepared performance for the public. The audiences were moved by the activeness of the survivors. Many organizations have provided free lectures and consultations for cancer related people. For example, Tianjin Anti-Cancer Association organized a forum for doctors and cancer patients. They focused the ways to avoid cancer recurrence and to reduce the cancer incidence of cancer patients’ later generations.
By Feb. 10, 2010, the reports released that fourteen local anti-cancer associations, 20 hospitals and 47 institutes organized various activities in their regions. Nearly two hundreds oncologists participated in the World Cancer Day 2010. Over 15,000 flyers were send out. Around 5,000 people were benefit from free lectures and diagnosis.
For the CACA, the year 2010 will be a important year. The World Cancer Day 2010 is a perfect start of facing the challenge and overcome obstacles with strong determination and a united heart, and insuring stable development in cancer control.
