The 4th General Assembly of the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control and the Summit of Cancer Control

  On October 12, 2009, the 4th General Assembly of the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control and the Summit of Cancer Control was held in Beijing. 280 people included the oncologists from home and aboard, members, board of directors, volunteers and friends of the press participated in the conference. Michael O’Leary, the delegate from the World Health Organization Tobacco Free Task Group and the experts from the tobacco control organizations of Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan made impressive speeches in the summit. Prof. Zhu Baihua, Assistant of General Secretary, Prof. Zhi Xiuyi and Director of Science Publication Department were invited to attend the conference.

  Huang Jiefu, President of the 4th Council of the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control he would lead the association to put forward the implement of WHO’s “Framework Convention on Tobacco Control”. The organization will provide advice for the government according to the local situation and set up local association on tobacco control so as to realize the some-free worksite. It will also popularize the tobacco knowledge through mass media and offer platform for the academic communication nationally and internationally.

  In the speech of Director of WHO Tobacco Free Task Group, Dr. Douglas mentioned in the speech “Global Tobacco Control: Challenge, Opportunity and Experience” that, Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including cancer, lung diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Despite this, it is common throughout the world. A number of countries have legislation restricting tobacco advertising, and regulating who can buy and use tobacco products, and where people can smoke.
