The “World Cancer Day” initiative was lunched by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in 2000, which takes place every year on February 4th. On this day, various cancer science propaganda and education events are undertaken all around the world, aiming at advocating new approaches to facilitate cooperation among varieties of organizations, promoting progress in cancer research, prevention and treatment, so as to advance the benefit of the whole mankind.

　　On Feburary 4, 2012, the inauguration for the 2012 World Cancer Day was lauched in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The inauguration was held by Chinese Anti-Cancer Association(CACA), sponsored by the Society of Pathology of CACA, and Sichuan University West China Hospital. The theme for the 2012 “World Cancer Day” is “Together it is possible”, which attracts oncological experts, government staffs, and general public to join the event. The event includes free medical consulting, science propaganda practical activity, experts discussion seminar, and professional salon.

　　Dr. Xi-Shan Hao, as the Chairman of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) introduces the theme for the 2012 World Cancer Day and 2011 UN NCD Summit. Dr. Hao indicates that the UN Summit on NCDs was held in New York in September 2011, when cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease were identified as the four main NCDs. In that summit, UN Member States probed into the current situation, harm and treating approaches of NCDs including cancer, and unanimously passed the Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases. The Declaration recognizes the scale of the NCD crisis and states that the resources devoted to combating NCDs are not commensurate with the magnitude of the problem. Severe problems concerning cancer treatment still exist such as unbalanced distribution of cancer institution and public health workers. Therefore, cancer prevention and control work in China faces more severe challenges than other countries and more endeavors from Chinese cancer organizations and workers are imperative. As the UICC China Spoke, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) will consolidate our commitment of “Uniting together in the fight against cancer” in our work in all respects. Dr. Hao emphasizes that CACA will gather more opinions from medical institutions, academic societies and the public, and provide more constructive policy suggestions for the government, so as to unite varieties of strength to fight for the prevention and control of cancer and ultimately the benefit of cancer patients.

　　Mr. Quan-an Mao, the Director of the News Release Center of the Ministry of Public Health in China, states that cancer is become the No. 1 disease for threatening people’s health. In order to improve the acknowledgement of Chinese public concerning the cancer, the News Release Center will collaborate with oncological experts of CACA, implement cancer prevention and treatment science propaganda activity in the nation.

　　Mr. Liangyou Wu, the Director of the Disease Control Bureau, demonstrates that the environmental pollution and unhealthy lifestyle are the other two main factors for causing cancer besides inheritance. According to WHO statistics, 40% cancers can be prevented, and at least 1/3 cancers can be treated via early detection and diagnosis. There are two ways for effective cancer prevention: firstly, healthy lifestyle reduces the cancer incidence; secondly, early detection and diagnosis helps cancer treatment.

　　The reform of medicine and health system, which is implemented currently around our whole nation, mainly focuses on carrying out public health service projects, providing health education for citizens, screening cervical cancer and breast cancer for rural women, and conducting early diagnosis and treatment in high-risk areas in terms of cancers, especially gastrointestinal cancer. It aims at making more people can prevent, discover and deal with disease early. The prevention and control of cancer needs to integrate resources both inside and outside the health system. In addition to professional services from basic health institutions, professional public health institutions and hospitals, endeavors from various industries, associations, enterprise and the public are also imperative. Only by working together could we be strong enough to fight against cancer.

　　Ms. Bing Xin, the Deputy Director of Science Propaganda Dept. of China Association for Science and Technology, mentions that disseminating early detection and diagnosis of cancer science knowledge to patients, families, and even the public is significantly important. In current, the cancer survival rate is exceeding to 50%. The tumor-bearing surviving is not a legend anymore. We, everyone, need to work together to promote exchanging the surviving experiences, spreading the advanced cancer control ideas, delivering life hopes, so that for making everyone enjoy their lifes. Conquering cancer is not an empty slogan, the government, society, and everyone will get together to make efforts with continuously development of medical science.

　　After the inauguration, CACA were held 2012 World Cancer Day Professional Salon collaborating with China Digital Science and Technology Museum. Dr. Xi-Shan Hao and other two oncological experts join the salon, further discussing the implication of World Cancer Day, colorectal, lung, and breast cancer prevention and treatment. The themed“Togther it is possible”experts discussion seminar were held at the same time. The seminar mainly discusses the problems, ideas, and demands when experts have in the cancer control careers. Meanwhile, the seminar indicates the idea for “together work and cancer control” and makes consent for disseminating cancer science knowledge to public in the future.

Professional salon

　　The “2012 World Cancer Day ” activities of cancer diagnosis advisory and popular science propaganda involves many kinds of common tumors such as lung cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma and esophagus cancer, and so on. People from 3 communities in Chengdu, cancer patients, and non-medical major students join the activity. Knowledge of cancer prevention and control was publicized in the form of wall plate and advisory service was provided for people who have health problems. The specimen library of cancer pathology in West China Hospital, Sichuan University was visited, and live introduction was made by the medical personnel. More than ten medium from Beijing and Sichuan provided special report concerning the event.
