The 21st Asia Pacific Cancer Conference (APCC), organized by Malaysian Oncological Society and supported by the Asian and Pacific Federation of Organization for Cancer Research and Control (APFOCC), was successfully held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 10–12 November 2011. The theme of this conference is “The Science and Strategy of Cancer Control”.

The chairman of this conference is Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim A. Wahid, and the vice-chairman is Dr Xi-Shan Hao, who is the president of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA). Kazuo Tajima from Japanese Cancer Society worked as the secretary-general. 21 APFOCC members such as Australian Cancer Society, Indian Cancer Society and South Korean Cancer Society, as well as 1200 delegates from more than 20 Asia-Pacific countries and regions participated in the conference. The conference lasted for 3 days. Through ways of special lecture, keynote presentation and wall poster, delegates probed into topics including breast cancer, lung cancer, hepatobiliary cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, head and neck cancer, gynaecology and urology cancer, colon and bladder cancer, epidemiology, palliative care, screening and prevention, and aetiology and preventive strategies.
In order to show the comprehensive strength of cancer prevention and control in China, CACA tried its best to organize oncology scholars all around China to submit papers to the conference. In addition, CACA also organized a delegation consisted of 67 Chinese delegates to participate. Totally 68 papers were received from Chinese scholars, 5 of which were selected by the conference to be presented and 21 of which were selected to be posted. 5 presenters including Prof. Fengming Wang, Xijiang Zhao and Kai Li from Chinese delegation were granted the “Best Investigator Award”. 5 scholars obtained the “Best Poster Award”, 1 of whom is Chinese.

The Asia Pacific Cancer Conference (APCC), which is held biennially, is a main activity of APFOCC. Since the 1st APCC was held in Japan, it has been held in many countries and regions such as China, South Korea and India. The APCC has now become an important platform for Asia-Pacific oncology scholars to communicate their academic opinions and share their newest research findings and experience. CACA organized the 10th APCC in 1991 in Beijing, and it will organize the 22nd APCC in 2013 in Tianjin.
On behalf of CACA, president Xi-Shan Hao attended the handover ceremony of APFOCC Flag and made a speech. He first presented his congratulations on the successful organization of the 21st APCC, and highly affirmed the endeavor and contribution of Malaysian Oncological Society. He pointed out that in consideration of the high incidence rate of cancer in the world, cancer control strategy of Asia-Pacific countries and regions plays a crucial role in the effective cancer control all over the world. He appealed that the 21 APFOCC members should be closely integrated and constitute long-term and strategic policies for cancer control, so as to reduce the incidence rate of cancer in the Asia-Pacific region and make greater contribution to the global cancel control career. Finally, president Hao delivered again his appreciation to the invitation of Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim A. Wahid, and pointed out that the 22nd APCC in Tianjin will draw on the successful experience of the 21st APCC.

At last, the conference was closed by playing a 3-minute introduction video named “The Friendly Tianjin”.
