The 21st World Cancer Congress has been successfully held in Shenzhen

  From August 18th to 21st, the 21st World Cancer Congress (WCC) was held in Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Centre (SZCEC). The 21st WCC was hosted by International Union Against Cancer (UICC), and co-hosted by Chinese Medical Association (CMA) and Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA). Dr. Xi-Shan Hao as the Congress President and the representative of host organizations was invited to presented at the opening ceremony as well as the closing ceremony of the Congress.

  “Preventing the preventable, and treating the treatable— systems to make it happen” is the general theme of the 2010 World Cancer Congress. The congress program has been developed by five tracks which are cancer prevention, cancer treatment, supportive and palliative care, tobacco control, and cross-track sessions. There are 102 sessions held in the congress, thousand of delegates shared their views and made communications during the Congress.

  Simultaneously, UICC Board of Director Meeting, World Cancer Leaders' Summit, Asia-Pacific Cancer Forum, and the Discussion “The cost of cancer” hosted by American Cancer Society (ACS) and LIVERSTRONG Foundation were held. Dr. Hao was successfully re-elected as the Board of Director of UICC of 2010-2012 through the vote of UICC Board of Director Meeting. Moreover, the 21st World Cancer Congress Press Conference and UICC China  Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM)  Classification Committee were set up and other activities were launched during the congress. In addition, CACA, as the Chinese host of the 21st WWC, set a booth in the exhibition hall and handed out publicity materials to domestic and foreign delegates in order to show the development and achievement of CACA. According to the statistics from the CACA financial department, the booth successfully distributed 1600 materials and received over 1300 people.

Mr.Cary Adams

  Mr.Cary Adams, the Chief Executive Officer of UICC, hosted the closing ceremony and announced the 21st WWC was a successful and wonderful congress held in Shenzhen. Later, the immediate pass president of UICC, David Hill, presented a general conclusion with regard to the congress program. Dr. Hill indicated the statistics of the 4-days congress: over 3300 people participated in the congress, including over 1800 Chinese delegates and 1500 foreign delegates. 37% of the delegates are from Asia, 25% from Europe, 17% from North America, and 10% from Africa.

  Due to the great contribution made by Chinese host organizations, Dr. Hao, as the representative of the CMA and CACA, was invited to make a speech on the stage. He pointed out that the 21st WCC held in China established a new milestone in the field of cancer prevention and treatment in China. Therefore, Dr. Hao appealed that defeating cancer is everyone’s business; everyone has responsibility to take action to protect themselves against the threat of cancer. In addition, Dr. Hao expressed gratitude for the great support and assistance of Shenzhen government. He praised Shenzhen is a very charming city that impresses him deeply.

  Dr.Eduardo Cazap, the imcoming President of the UICC presented the UICC’s new prospect in the closing ceremony. He mentioned, together with the World Cancer Declaration, cancer would be officially recognized by the nation’s policy-making process. At last, Eduardo announced the 2012 World Cancer Congress will be held in Montreal, Canada. The video “Kiss Montreal” was played in the ceremony as the end.
