The Press Conference on the 21st World Cancer Congress being held in Beijing

  Chinese Medical Association (CMA), International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and CACA hosted the Press Conference on the 21st World Cancer Congress in Beijing on May 27, 2010 to announce that the 21st World Cancer Congress (WCC) will be held in Shenzhen, China on August 18-21. The conference was chaired by Prof. WANG Ying, Deputy Secretary-General of CACA. Eighteen UICC Board of Directors and over 20 media attended.

  Prof. David Hill, President of UICC introduced in detail to the participants the background and preparation of the 21st WCC. The theme of this conference is “Prevent the preventable, treat the treatable, system to make it happen”. The 21st WCC will focus on primary prevention, screening and early detection, treatment and management, supportive care, end of life, as well as on how programmes, infrastructures and resources are integrated into existing delivery systems. Best practices and the challenges of maximizing effectiveness, efficiency and outreach in different resource settings will be an important aspect of dialogue and debate.

  Professor HAO Xishan introduced the cancer control situation and progress in China as well as the procedure of applying for the right to host the 21st WCC. He said that China’s success in biding the 21st WCC is ten year’s joint effort of quit a few Chinese oncologists. During the congress, the World Leader Summit will be host which invited government leaders, health ministers, senior officials and other important leaders for 180 people. They will discuss the challenges and problems of world cancer control.

  Prof. WU Mingjiang, Vice President of CMA expressed his welcome to the participants of the press conference on behalf of Prof. CHEN Zhu, Minister of Health. Prof. WU told the media that CACA and CMA attached great importance to the 21st WCC. They would cooperate with UICC and Shenzhen Government’s work. He also hoped that the friends from the press could help the hosting organizations to promote the congress and make it a great event.
