The First LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit

  The First LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit was held in Dublin, the capital of Ireland on August 23-26, 2009. The meeting was organized by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Upward 500 people from 60 countries participated in the great congress. Ten Chinese delegates including Prof. Hao Xishan, President of CACA, Prof. Wang Ying, Vice President of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital and Mr. Sun Zhiming, a cancer survivor and Deputy Secretary-General of the Tianjin Anti-Cancer Association Cancer Recovery Committee were invited to attend the meeting.

  On the opening ceremony, the delegates in national customs carried their national flags and greeted to all attendees. President of the Summit and the founder of the Lance Armstrong Foundation warmly welcomed all the participants in his speech during the opening ceremony. “By 2010, cancer is projected to be the leading cause of death worldwide. Yet, cancer is one of the most preventable and curable of the major life-threatening diseases facing the world today. The LIVE STRONG Global Cancer Summit is a landmark event bringing together world leaders, corporations, non-governmental organizations and individuals to spotlight their collective commitment to the global fight against cancer.” There were 12 panels to study the influence of cancer on individual, economy and community. Prof. Hao was invited to serve as a panelist on the panel under the subject of “Breakfast Briefing: Stigma” which engaged a discussion around the stigma experienced by cancer survivors and the most promising strategies for addressing this stigma and silence. He introduced the physical and psychological condition of adults after being diagnosed as cancer patients, and he also mentioned the breast cancer screening project which covers 30 provinces and cities and 530 thousand women all across China. When he talked about the UICC 2010 World Cancer Congress to be held in Shenzhen, China in August, 2010, the delegates showed great interest in this event.

  The signing ceremony of UICC “World Cancer Declaration” was held during the congress. President of UICC, Dr. David Hill said in his speech that people of all the part of the society should take immediate steps to slow and ultimately reverse the growth in deaths from cancer. The World Cancer Declaration was developed by the UICC. It takes an optimistic approach to tackling the cancer crisis, setting out 11 targets and 16 priority actions for concerted action to reverse current trends.The targets include significant drops in global tobacco consumption, obesity and alcohol intake; universal vaccination programs for hepatitis B and human papilloma virus to prevent liver and cervical cancer; dramatic reductions in the emigration of health workers with specialist cancer training; universal availability of effective pain medication; and the dispelling of myths and misconceptions about the disease.

  Prof. Wang Ying accepted the television interview for Armstrong Foundation Column. She gave an introduction of the anti-cancer projects in China. she also express her opinion of the global and local palliative care and pain control.

  The three-day event was a platform for participants to share their unique experiences, stories and commitments to the fight against cancer so as to create a sustained movement that changes the course of cancer in history. It builds an international grassroots movement that will take cancer from isolation to collaboration.
