The National Cancer Week is a public education program initiated by the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) from 1994. The CACA cooperates with cancer related organizations and enterprises to host a series of activities to arouse the anti-cancer awareness of the public during the second week of every April.
Opening Ceremony
The theme of the 15th NCW is “Standardize the Treatment of Cancer Pain, Improve the Life Quality of Cancer Patient”. Aiming at improving the life quality of cancer patients, the CACA introduced the WHO’s three-step "ladder" for cancer pain relief to promote the pain evaluation and make known the new methods which might help cancer patients to live a better life.
The Opening Ceremony of the 15th NCW was held in Guangzhou, the one of the most developed economic cities in China. The leadership of the CACA and the Guangzhou Government presented the ceremony.
During the ceremony, an anti-cancer book series was published. The lucid written book series introduces the latest anti-cancer knowledge with vivid pictures. There was a dactylological dance by one thousand students of Guangdong Medical College., which moved a lot of cancer victims.
Local Anti-Cancer Associations
Tianjin Anti-Cancer Association organized 18 activities including free lectures, consultation, expert’s interviews, etc. The doctors from Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital hosted the Anti-Cancer Knowledge Game in residential communities. A Donation Ceremony was held for a leukemia patient whose family could not afford the treatment fee of her disease. .
300 medical workers from Jilin Anti-Cancer Association participated in the 15th NCW. Over 60 consultation desks are set to offer free consultation services and distribute flyers. The Association sent 28 mobile publicity vans to provide public education. The NCW was interviewed by dozens of media.
The Shandong Anti-Cancer Association sent out 130 experts to be at booths which were set in dozens of cities to provide free consultation services and distribute flyers. 4600 citizens received free diagnosis.
The Guangxi Ant-Cancer Association assembled 1000 citizens, including cancer patients and the leadership of the association to jog around the Nanhu Lake. A cancer patient told the newspaper, “As a cancer victim, I believe a good psychological condition is a perfect way to relief cancer pain. Jogging with so many people makes me go back to my old days when I’m away from cancer.”
Live internet interviews were provided by Beijing Anti-Cancer Association and SOHU.COM to introduce cancer prevention.
According to the reports, 133,300 brochures were distributed and 61,000 people received free diagnosis.
Other Activities
During the 15th NCW, Community Conversations on Cancer Control was developed in 5 cities and provinces. Community Conversations is an activity launched by the CAMPAIGN TO CONTROL CANCER, the International Union Against Cancer and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Community Conversations are volunteer-led events of 6 to 50 people or more, where participants use prepared materials to talk about cancer and cancer control. A conversation involves people who care about, work on and live with cancer - to share, learn and call for new and better responses to cancer control worldwide. Conversation could uncover the public’s awareness, experiences and expectations about cancer and cancer control.
On April 30, The Opening Ceremony of “2009 Hand in Hand•Hope” and Closing Ceremony of “2008 Dialogue•Hope” was held in Beijing. “2009 Hand in Hand • Hope” and “2008 Dialogue • Hope” were initiated by the CACA. Over 40 media representatives reported the ceremony.
The “2008 Diagnosis•Hope” is a program related to colorectal cancer., Lymphoma, Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer and Gastroenterological Cancer. Through established a platform for the communication between patients and oncology experts in order to make it know that cancer is preventable and curable.
A TV program on “2009 Hand in Hand • Hope” will be shown on CCTV to introduce the anti-cancer fight after the foundation of new China. This will be a present for the 60th Anniversary of New China.
