The Opening Ceremony of the 15th National Cancer Week (NCW) was held in Guangzhou, the one of the most developed economic cities in China. The ceremony was hosted by CACA and supported by Sun Yat-Sen University, Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center and Guangzhou Anti-Cancer Association. The theme of the 15th NCW is “Standardize the treatment of cancer pain, improve the life quality of cancer patient”.

　　The leadership of the Guangzhou Municipal Government, the China Association for Science and Technology, CACA, etc. presented the opening ceremony. Also attend the ceremony was Prof. Nanshan Zhong, the President of the China Medical Association, who led the anti-SARS campaign in China in 2003.

　　Dr. Guangchao Zhang, the General Secretary of CACA delivered a speech during the ceremony on behalf of President Xishan Hao. “Cancer patients deserve more love and care, especially those last stage patients”, he said.

　　The International Association for the Study of Pain proposed this year to be the “Global Year of Cancer Pain”. And the World Health Organization has developed a three-step "ladder" for cancer pain relief.

　　Dr. Zhong told the press that “Public education is one of the most effective ways of cancer control”. Cancer is a curable and preventable. However, a kind of misunderstanding exists among the population.

　　One of the 2010 targets for the cancer control set by the World Cancer Declaration 2008 is “Public attitudes towards cancer will improve and damaging myths and misconceptions about the disease will be dispelled”

　　Dr. Kan Gao from the China Association for Science and Technology paid a high tribute to the work CACA had done to the anti-cancer campaign. “I believe the 15th National Cancer Week will be a complete success under the guidance of Scientific Outlook on Development and the Spirit of the 17th Party Congress”.’

　　Mr. Handong Li, the Deputy Secretary-General f Guangdong Municipal Government and the Secretary of Party Group of Guagndong Province Department of Public Health both delivered important speeches during the opening ceremony.
