The 14th National Cancer Week

  The opening ceremony of the 14th National Cancer Week with the theme of “A Smoke-Free Nation, Keeps Children Away From Cancer” was held on April 13 at Tianjin Galaxy Square. This National Cancer Week was sponsored by International Union Against Cancer (UICC), Chinese Anti-cancer Association (CACA), Chinese Association on Tobacco Control, Tianjin Science and Technology Association, Tianjin Bureau of Public Health, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin Anti-cancer Association, and Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital. This is the first cooperation on National Cancer Week between CACA and UICC, the largest anticancer organization in the world. The president of UICC sent a congratulatory letter to the Cancer Week.

  Speeches were delivered by the leaders of Tianjin Municipal Government, China Association for Science and technology, Chinese Ministry of Health Tianjin Science and technology Association and the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Opening Ceremony.

  The Vice Director of Disease Control Bureau, Ministry of Health, Mr. Lingzhi Kong mentioned in his speech that the incidence of cancer was on rise in China. Cancer as a common disease was threatening the national health condition.

  The President of CACA, Prof. Xishan Hao released that there are 350 million smokers in China, and it has been increasing 3 million annually. The average age of smokers is becoming younger and younger. There are 540 million people who are exposed to second hand smoke, among which 180 million are under the age of 15. Tobacco is the top carcinogen that can be prevented. Therefore, providing a smoking free-environment for children is both inevitable and necessary.

  Declaration of “Adult and Children, hands in hands, Smoke-free against Cancer” was launched in the Opening Ceremony to build a “Smoke-free Olympic Games, Environment-Friendly Olympic Games”. The declaration involves the following aspects:

  1. Medical works set examples of quitting smoke.

  2. Adolescents say no to tobacco.

  3. Smokers do their utmost to give up smoking, or at least not to smoke in public, especially when there are children nearby.

  4. To decline tobacco selling, to ban cigarettes advertising.

  5. Mass media puts more focus on tobacco control to help citizens realize the threads of tobacco.

  6. “Framework Convention on Tobacco Control” to be carried out.

  A campaign of give up smoking will be launched among healthcare workers in China. Free consultation and lectures on cancer prevention will be provided to the public. It will be broadcasted in media accordingly.
