The 2008 World Cancer Congress

  The 20th World Cancer Congress was held in Geneva, Switzerland on August 27, 2008. Nearly 4000 delegates from over 126 countries presented. As the hosting organization of 2010 World Cancer Congress, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA) and Chinese Medical Association (CMA) organized a delegation lead by Prof. Xishan Hao, the president of CACA and composed of 33 experts and officials to attend the conference.

    The ceremony of signing the contract for the World Cancer Congress 2010 was held in the Saas Fee room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on 26, August. The attendees were Prof. Xishan Hao (the President of CACA), Prof. Guangchao Zhang (the General Secretary of the CACA), Prof. Jin Gu, Prof, Ying Wang, Prof. Ning Zhang (the Deputy Secretary-Generals of the CACA) and Prof. Xiaoming Han (the Deputy General Secretary of Chinese Medical Association). On the signing ceremony, Prof. Xishan Hao and Prof. Xiaoming Han introduced the progress of anti-cancer career and pointed out that 2010 World Cancer Congress would promote the cancer research, prevention and diagnosis in China. Dr. Franco Cavalli (the Outgoing President of the UICC), Dr. David Hill (the Present President of UICC) and Dr. Isabel Mortara (the Chief Executive Officer of UICC) highly appreciated the contribution made by CACA to the anti-cancer projects in Aisa-Pacific Region. They mentioned that the deliberate preparation gave them complete confidence in the 2010 World Cancer Congress.

  On August 27, 2008, the opening ceremony of 2008 World Cancer Congress was held in the International Conference Center Geneva. Speeches were delivered by Mr. Pascal Couchepin, President of Swiss Confederation; Mr. Tabare Vazquez, President of Uruguay and Mz. Margaret Chan (Fengfuzhen Feng), Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), etc. Dr. Franco Cavalli reported the anti-cancer progress made by UICC worldwide in the last two years and also pointed out the working priority in the future. Prof. Hao made friendly conversation with Prof. Margaret Chan after the ceremony. On the evening of August 27, UICC gave a banquet under the support of the CACA in honor of the distinguished guests. During the congress, the Chinese Delegation exhibited and exchanged the achievements in oncology to foreign experts by reports, posters and booths. The Chinese Delegation also took part in the following activities:

  1. Prof. Xishan Hao and Prof. Yixin Zeng chaired the China Session of the congress. Prof. Xishan Hao, Yixin Zeng, Wei Zhang, Jin Gu, Ning Zhang, Yuankai Shi, Xiuyi Zhi and Weilian Li delivered speeches in Epidemiology, the pathogenesis and diagnosis of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, oncological genomics, colorectal cancer, nano-medicine for tumor, the diagnosis of gastric cancer, tobacco control and anti-cancer herbal drugs. The Chinese Delegation held a banquet after the seminal.

  2. Prof. Ying Wang made a presentation titled “The Application of Tianjin Declaration” that introduced the progress made in tobacco control and anti-cancer public education.

  3. Prof. Xishan Hao chaired the Session named “Risk impact of unique Asia cancer and its primary prevention strategy” with Prof. Tajima. He provided large quantity of data to prove the infrequence of society factors on the cancer genesis. His speech aroused the audiences’ great interest.

  4. A booth place was set by CACA and Chinese Medical Association to introduce anti-cancer process and the preparation for 2010 World Cancer Congress by video. There were typically Chinese gifts for the participants which were appreciated.5. During the congress, Prof. Guolan Gao (Vice President of the CACA), Prof. Xiubao Ren, Prof. Kexin Chen, Prof. Peifang Liu (Director of Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital) provided poster presentations that showed advanced technology of cancer prevention and treatment.

  On the closing ceremony of 2008 World Cancer Congress which was held on August 31, 2008, the persons and organizations who made special contribution to the anti-cancer process received awards from UICC. Ms. Isabel Mortara reported the progress of movie festival, and awarded a prize for the “Best Picture”.

  At the end of the ceremony, Prof. Xishan Hao on behalf of CACA extended warm welcome to the anti-cancer workers worldwide to attend the 2010 World Cancer Congress which would be held in Beijing. A video introducing the scenery of Beijing was showed. Finally, all member of Chinese Delegation stood up and express their hospitality by enthusiastic applause.
